The Windy City
The Windy City. A city full of fun, wonder, and complexity! Whether or not you have been to Chi Town, you have come to the right place. I am excited to share why Chicago is so special to me and how I can help recommend things that will make the trip just as special to you.
My Connection to Chicago
I think it would help to start with a little bit of background about my connection to Chicago. This past summer, I was given an amazing opportunity to do an internship in the city of Chicago. This was the longest trip I have ever taken on my own, but I learned more than I could have ever imagined! Through this experience, I learned so much about navigating a new city. I was able to perfect (well, perfect may be a strong word, but that is a story for another time) public transportation, learn how to walk down the city streets with headphones and sunglasses for a “main character” moment, find the best and most unique coffee shops, and to find fun activities on the weekends! This past summer I tried more new foods, met amazing friends, and I was able to grow both professionally and personally. These are just a few reasons why I have a love for Chicago.
Food!
Are there any other foodies in the audience??? Well, I am right there along with you! I believe that through good food, community and happiness is built. Chicago, Illinois is not lacking by any means in the restaurant department. Whatever type of food you can imagine, there is a very high chance that you can travel somewhere in the city and find it. Say it is a random Tuesday and you are craving a sandwich, you can walk down Michigan Ave and find one of the best sandwiches you have ever had. Or, say it is a Friday night and you and a group of friends want to find a fun place to eat. Walk or ride on down to Old Town and eat at the Happy Camper to have some of the best pizza ever with a fun environment. The specific thing that I love about food in Chicago is that there is always something new to try in all price ranges. This past summer, I definitely was eating on a budget, but that did not stop me from trying some of the best food I have ever had. I found hole-in-the-wall restaurants that have quality food for a college student price. Although I typically opted for the cheaper places, I splurged a few times and have opinions for places like that as well.
Fun Activities
Not only was food a highlight of my summer, so were activities. From running along Lake Michigan, to exploring street festivals, to spending an evening at a jazz club, there are activities for everyone! Also, there are activities that are catered toward all financial levels. Personally, I have many suggestions for people traveling on a budget. I was able to have the summer of my life and explore all the activities Chicago has to offer with a limited budget. Some of my favorites include divvy bike riding along the lake, listening to local artists at the Randolph Street Festival, and simply just shopping (or window-shopping) along the infamous Michigan Avenue.
I can’t wait to share recommendations and an itinerary with you. Stay tuned because there will be another blog post with detailed suggestions about planning a trip on a budget to Chicago, Illinois. Talk to you soon!!
